Being so centrally located Auchterarder House is well placed for exploring Scotland. Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews are all around an hour’s drive from the house and you can be in the Highlands within a couple of hours, so the house is a wonderful base. There are so many different activities within easy reach and if golf is your sport, the world- famous Gleneagles Hotel is located just 5 minutes from the house. With its King’s, Queen’s and PGA Centenary courses the hotel offers guests access to some wonderful golf and lunch afterwards in the Dormy is always fun. There are more formal restaurants in the main hotel building, along with an excellent spa and other facilities.
Within easy reach of the house, guests can find a myriad of sightseeing opportunities including famous castles like Glamis, childhood home of the late Queen Mother and the setting for Macbeth; Blair Castle; ancestral home of the Dukes of Atholl and Scone Palace; the crowning place of Scottish kings. St Andrews has lots to offer aside from its famous golf courses and is close to the picturesque fishing villages of East Neuk, which guests love to explore. The house is also near many famous distilleries around Crieff, Aberfeldy and Pitlochry and we often send whisky lovers to Edradour, Scotland’s smallest distillery. Many of these attractions are close to each other so non-whisky lovers can split from the group and head off to explore some of our magnificent gardens like the House of Pitmuies and Cowden Japanese Garden.
Children can be kept happily entertained with visits to the Scottish Deer Centre at Cupar, Go Karting at Knockhill or exploring the outdoor maize at Cairnie. Activities can be arranged at the house like falconry & archery and there is a mass of other exciting pursuits within easy reach. Edinburgh is also fun to explore with a visit to the castle to give you an overview of the city, followed by a walking tour of the Old Town with one of our guides.
